U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Haiti to reaffirm the U.S. government's commitment to a multinational mission aimed at combating gang violence in the Caribbean nation and to advocate for the long-awaited general elections. The visit comes as concerns mount over the funding and equipment shortages facing the U.N.-backed mission led by 400 Kenyan police.

The U.S. government is exploring the possibility of a U.N. peacekeeping operation to bolster resources in the fight against gangs that currently control 80% of Haiti's capital. Blinken's agenda includes meetings with Haitian officials, a transitional presidential council, and political party leaders to discuss progress in improving security and the appointment of a provisional electoral council to pave the way for upcoming elections.

Haiti has been grappling with political turmoil and gang violence since the last elections in 2016, exacerbated by the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Recent gang attacks, including coordinated assaults on police stations and the main airport, have further destabilized the country. The arrival of Kenyan police in June has led to increased patrols and operations to restore security.

Despite these efforts, gangs continue to pose a threat to communities surrounding Port-au-Prince. Blinken is scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic after his trip to Haiti, where discussions will focus on strengthening economic ties, promoting human rights, and enhancing regional security, particularly in Haiti. The Dominican Republic's President has faced criticism for his treatment of Haitian migrants and the construction of a wall between the two nations.
