US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed the United States' commitment to preventing a wider conflict in the Middle East. Blinken stated that the US is actively engaging in efforts to deter escalation and promote diplomacy in the region.
During a gathering of Asian leaders in Laos, Blinken highlighted the importance of addressing humanitarian needs in Gaza. He expressed concern over the inadequacy of assistance reaching the people in the besieged Palestinian enclave and emphasized the US's direct engagement with Israel to address these urgent needs.
Regarding the situation in Lebanon, Blinken stressed the necessity of a diplomatic solution. He acknowledged the ongoing Israeli ground incursion in the south of Lebanon and intensified airstrikes in the fight against Hezbollah. Blinken voiced support for a stronger Lebanese state emerging from the conflict, emphasizing that the future of Lebanon should be determined by its people.
The US ambassador to the United Nations also underscored the urgent need for Israel to address the 'catastrophic conditions' in Gaza. Any actions by the Israeli government that limit the delivery of aid were warned to exacerbate the suffering of the population in Gaza.
As tensions continue to rise in the region, Blinken's remarks signal a concerted effort by the US to prevent further escalation and promote stability through diplomatic means.
