US retaliates against Iran-backed targets in Iraq and Syria

In a recent development, US forces have carried out retaliatory strikes on numerous Iran-backed targets in Iraq and Syria, dropping over 100 bombs. The Biden administration seeks to convey a hardline message to Iran through these strikes. The operation had been hinted at throughout the week, and it eventually took place with a delay of six days. Officials have indicated that there may be further strikes in the future.

However, some critics question the effectiveness of these strikes given that no casualties were reported. They argue that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard officers responsible for planning the attacks remain unharmed and continue to pose a threat. The critics also emphasize the significance of the Abraham Accords, which aligned the Sunni Gulf Arabs against Iran's Shia factions. This alignment demonstrated a geopolitical choice for the Arabs to side with the United States and Israel over Iran. Moreover, it had far-reaching implications for the future of technology and economies in the region.

These critics contend that the recent strikes have achieved little in terms of deterring further attacks. They express concern about the potential consequences of an attack on a US vessel, suggesting that it would result in a mass casualty event. The effectiveness of the Biden administration's actions is also questioned in regard to military recruitment, as it becomes challenging to motivate young people to join the Army if the lives of fallen soldiers are not avenged.

The lack of clear goals and direction from the administration is causing confusion both domestically and internationally. The world is in search of strong leadership, and critics argue that President Biden, Secretary of State Blinken, and National Security Advisor Sullivan have fallen short in providing it.

Regarding Iran's response, it is argued that the strikes merely continue the ongoing mission for the Iranians. The Biden administration has been cautious not to invade Iran politically or touch their refineries, although it is worth noting that Iran's economic and military power has significantly increased in recent years. Iranian nationals have also been reported crossing the US southern border, further complicating the situation.

As the discussion regarding these strikes unfolds, critics emphasize the need for a clear and effective strategy to address the growing threat posed by Iran and to protect US interests in the region.
