US Prioritizes Return Of Journalist Held In Syria Since 2012

The United States has expressed its priority for the return of Austin Tice, a freelance journalist held in Syria since 2012, to Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that in communications with parties known to interact with HTS, the message has been clear that Tice's safe return is paramount.

Miller emphasized the importance of anyone operating in Syria to be vigilant and assist in locating Tice, ensuring his safe return to the US promptly. While Miller did not confirm if HTS has committed to this request, he mentioned that the US has engaged with Syrian opposition forces to gather information on Tice's whereabouts.

Regarding direct contact with HTS, a US-designated terrorist group, Miller highlighted that there are no legal barriers to communication under US law. He refrained from disclosing specific conversations but reiterated that all relevant parties in Syria have been informed of the US priorities in the short and medium term, including the transition process and government formation.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby also confirmed that the US is in communication with HTS and various Syrian rebel groups, indicating a comprehensive effort to secure Tice's release.
