NEW YORK: Venus Williams walked out on to the Arthur Ashe Stadium shortly after 3 pm on Tuesday. The afternoon sun veiled the far end of the storeyed venue, which on the day, had enough spare seating to go around the Queens Borough. In contrast the arena was topped to the rafters the previous evening when Serena Williams was in the house.
Not unlike the reception, Venus has played in the shadows of her celebrated sibling for much of her career. Not that she's complaining. The lanky veteran, kitted in a jade-green two piece, which she paired with gold hoops, went down 1-6, 6-7 (5) to Alison Van Uytvanck in the first round of the US Open, which according to the buzz in tennis is the American's last singles match. Venus, however, doesn't talk retirement.
