But back to the victor. This is the eighth consecutive tournament this year in which Alcaraz has reached the final. He’s a win away from his second US Open title and slam No6, and can also regain the world No 1 ranking next week. He’s the first man since Roger Federer in 2015 to reach the US Open final without dropping a set … and no male player has ever won this tournament without losing a set. But with Sinner most likely in the final, that particular feat could prove even beyond him. If Sinner beats Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second semi, which is coming up in about an hour, we’ve got ourselves a third consecutive slam final between the game’s top two. Yes please.
