NEW DELHI: After defeating Sander Arends and Robin Haase of the Netherlands, Rohan Bopanna of India and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden advanced to the second round of the US Open men's doubles competition.
On Thursday night, Bopanna and Ebden easily defeated their Dutch opponents, 6-3, 7-5, in a 64-minute first-round match.
The Indo-Australian pair, who finished second in the previous edition, had suffered three straight losses going into the season's last Grand Slam, but they persevered and won, as per PTI.
At first, Bopanna and Ebden had trouble serving; in the third game, they lost. They won the following four games, though, when they swiftly recovered their composure and broke their opponents' serve twice.
They encountered a similar difficulty in the second set, behind but rallying to tie the match at 5-5. To seal the victory, they then broke their opponents' serve once again.
The reigning Australian Open winners, the second seeds, will play Argentina's Federico Coria and Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena, who are ranked unseeded, in the second round on Friday.
