US midterm results: Republicans facing slim majority in House of Representatives, as Democrats pick up wins in key races

Republican Kevin McCarthy has won his party's nomination to become speaker of the US House of Representatives, as the GOP closes in on a majority there.

In the Senate, Rick Scott says he'll challenge current Republican leader Mitch McConnell for the top job on Wednesday.

While Democrats have held the Senate, Republicans remain one short of the 218-seat majority they need to take the House.

There are 10 races still to be called, with Democrats on 209 and Republicans holding 217.
