US midterm elections 2026 is going to be about the rising cost of living. The upcoming November 3 election will decide all 435 House seats and about one‑third of Senate seats.
Why are Republicans facing pressure?
Senate Republicans are in a dilemma as they need to decide whether to stay in Washington and pass bills or return home to campaign. The House Republicans have already left Washington for the polls.
Although several senators are thinking about bills on college sports, energy costs, credit card fees and insulin prices, some Republicans doubt that new bills will reach President Donald Trump before the election. Senator Ted Budd also said voters care more about affordability, fuel prices and grocery costs than college sports.
Why does affordability matter?
Gas, food, healthcare, housing and energy costs are main issues in the US midterm elections 2026. A Reuters/Ipsos poll has also found 47% registered voters said cost of living would be a crucial factor in their vote up from 39% in January. Morgan Stanleys midterm indicators also show changes in polling, presidential approval, consumer sentiment and gasoline prices.
What do polls show?
A PBS News NPR and Marist poll also found 53% registered voters preferred congressional candidates compared with 41% for Republicans. Independents favored Democrats by 25 points. The poll also found 70% voters said Trump would be a factor in their vote.
Why do the midterms matter?
The US midterm elections 2026 will decide who controls Congress. If Republicans keep both houses, Trump will have support for his legislative agenda. If Democrats win either house, congressional oversight and negotiations could change.
