US military on Sunday carried out several strikes on Iranian missile and air defence systems, Axios reported, citing a senior US official. The report added that US forces targeted small boats operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) at multiple locations around the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran stated that missiles launched by the 'enemy' targeted Qeshm Island, though there were no casualties in the attack, state news agency IRNA reported citing the governor of the island located near the strait.
There was no immediate comment by the US military.
The developments mark the latest escalation in strikes around the strategic waterway, which carries a significant share of global oil shipments.

Iran says Hormuz is closed, US disagrees
Washington and Tehran earlier issued conflicting claims over the status of the Strait of Hormuz as both sides intensified military operations in the Middle East region.
The US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said it struck around 140 targets, including missile and drone launch sites, ammunition depots and communications equipment, adding that the attacks were intended to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping.
"We bombed the hell out of them last night," US President Donald Trump told NBC's Meet the Press, as quoted by AP.
Iranian news agencies reported that a navy officer was killed in the strikes. Tehran responded by launching attacks against countries hosting US military forces in the region while reiterating that it alone should control the Strait of Hormuz and could charge vessels transiting through it.
"The era of one-sided deals is OVER. We told you: keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking," Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's Parliament speaker and a key negotiator, wrote on X.

The US has launched over three rounds of airstrikes in the past week following Iranian attacks on ships transiting the Hormuz via a route off Oman to avoid Iranian territorial waters.
While Trump and CENTCOM maintained on Sunday that the key waterway remained open to commercial traffic, Iran said the waterway would remain closed until stability was restored. Tehran also warned it could target "additional enemy bases in the region" if further attacks were carried out.
One killed, two injured in attacks on Iran
An employee of a telecommunications company was killed in attacks in the southern province of Iran's Hormozgan, as hostilities resumed between Tehran and Washington, while two others were injured.
"Following the enemy attack on Farur in Bandar Lengeh, one employee of the Mobile Communications Company of Iran was killed while carrying out his duties, and two of his colleagues were injured," the IRNA reported.
