US Defense Secretary Discusses Regional De-Escalation With Israeli Counterpart

U.S. Defense Secretary Austin hosts Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting at Ramstein

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently engaged in a conversation with his Israeli counterpart to discuss potential avenues for regional de-escalation, as per a Pentagon statement released on Thursday. The dialogue between Austin and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant coincides with ongoing high-level discussions in the Middle East aimed at finding resolutions to the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, while also seeking to prevent any retaliatory actions from Iran in response to Israeli military operations.

During the call, Austin reaffirmed the United States' dedication to achieving a diplomatic resolution in Lebanon that ensures the safe return of both Lebanese and Israeli civilians to their respective homes on either side of the border. Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder emphasized that the Secretary highlighted the importance of Israel's ongoing efforts and the need to continue advancing initiatives to ameliorate the severe humanitarian conditions in Gaza, as well as to enhance the prospects for securing the release of hostages and reaching a ceasefire agreement.

Austin further underscored the US' unwavering readiness to protect American personnel, Israel, and other regional allies from any potential threats posed by Iran and its affiliated proxies. The commitment to safeguarding the security and interests of all parties involved in the region was a central theme of the discussion between the US and Israeli defense officials.
