US comedian Chelsea Handler has kicked off the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards by making reference to the Duke of Sussex’s recent controversial memoir in her opening remarks.
The awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles have been blighted by a number of withdrawals because of Covid, but Chelsea was in fine form getting the show under way. “Before we get started, I just want everyone to know that we are here to have fun and keep the vibes high,” she told audiences. “I know that I have a reputation that precedes me, but you should all know that I have visited two years of therapy. So everyone is safe now.”
Speaking about CCA-nominated Netflix show, Dahmer, she added: “Dahmer became the third highest viewed show on Netflix with a combined watch time of one billion hours, which apparently is the same amount of time we’re going to have to listen to Prince Harry talk about his frostbitten penis. It’s enough already.”
Among the early winners was Black Panther star Angela Bassett, who won the award for best actress, saying she was “deeply humbled” by the accolade.
Daniel Radcliffe won best actor in a limited series or movie made for television for his portrayal of Weird Al Yankovic in the biopic of the US parody musician. The Harry Potter star was not present at the ceremony to collect the award.
The Critics Choice award for best original screenplay went to Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for sc-fi thriller Everything Everywhere All At Once, while Jeff Bridges was presented with the CCA lifetime achievement award by his Big Lebowksi costar John Goodman.
The veteran US actor – known for his seminal role in the film as “The Dude” – paid tribute in his acceptance speech to his late father Lloyd Bridges who, he said, had encouraged him to begin acting. “Telling stories. That’s, that’s the privilege actors get,” he said.
