US And Panama Sign Agreement To Address Illegal Immigration

U.S. Senate U.S. Senate Democrats weekly policy lunch at U.S. Capitol in Washington

An agreement has been reached between the United States and Panama to address the issue of illegal migration through the Darién Gap, a mountainous rainforest region connecting South and Central America. The agreement aims to prevent the passage of illegal migrants through this treacherous route.

Under the terms of the agreement, the US government will cover the cost of repatriating immigrants who enter Panama illegally through the Darién Gap. Additionally, the US will provide support to Panama in terms of equipment, transportation, and logistics for dealing with foreigners found in violation of Panama's immigration laws.

Panama, in turn, has committed to upholding all international agreements and conventions related to the rights of immigrants and refugees. The country's new President, Jose Raul Mulino, has emphasized that Panama will no longer serve as a transit country for illegal migrants.

The Darién Gap has witnessed a significant increase in the number of migrants attempting to cross it, with over 174,000 crossings reported from January to June of this year. President Mulino has expressed concern over the environmental and humanitarian impact of migration on the Darién Gap, stressing the need to protect its biodiversity from illicit activities.

Efforts to address the issue of illegal migration through the Darién Gap will involve collaboration between Panama and the United States, as well as other countries in the region. President Mulino has called for international solidarity in finding solutions to this complex problem.

With a record number of crossings reported last year, the situation in the Darién Gap remains a pressing concern. The agreement between the US and Panama represents a step towards addressing the challenges posed by illegal migration in the region.
