Paper £20 and £50 bank notes will expire within days as urgent deadline warning issued

Anyone with paper £20 and £50 notes have been issued a warning as the cash from Bank of Scotland and Bank of England are set to expire within days.

The Bank of England has issued a warning to anyone who still has £20 paper notes in their purse or wallet.

Time is running out to get them replaced as the new polymer version will only be recognised as legal tender. The polymer notes came into circulation back in 2020 and over the last two years, paper notes have been phased out.

From October 1, Bank of Scotland paper £20 and £50 notes will expire and no longer be considered as legal tender, while those with paper notes from the Bank of England, they will expire on September 30. There has been high demand to get the notes changed.

According to Bank of England, there are long queues and waiting times at banks where people are urgently trying to swap over their notes.

While there is no deadline to exchange the old notes for the polymer ones, customers are still rushing to get theirs swapped before they can no longer spend their paper money, according to Manchester Evening News.

A Bank of England statement said: "The Bank of England Counter is currently open from 9.30am to 3pm Monday to Friday and is experiencing very high demand.

“There will be long queues and you may encounter waiting times in excess of an hour. We would ask that you kindly consider the long wait times when travelling to the Bank to undertake an in person exchange - if you arrive after 2pm it is possible you may not get served before we close.”

The Bank suggested that customers should send their banknotes via post to them using a Postal Exchange Form unless they require them immediately. Before the September 30 deadline, the paper notes can also still be spent in shops.
