Dunnes Stores has recalled a batch of Smoky BBQ Irish Pork Ribs after it was discovered there was an unlisted allergen in the marinade.
According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, there is barley in the product - which is not mentioned on the label.
This makes the particular batch unsafe for customers who are coeliac or are intolerant to gluten.
The notice published today read: “The incorrect back label was applied to the implicated batch of Dunnes Stores Smoky BBQ Irish Pork Ribs.

“The product contains barley which is not mentioned on the label. This may make the batch unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten (barley).”
The affected batch is labeled ‘Dunnes Stores Smoky BBQ Irish Pork Ribs’ and is a pack size of 500g with the use-by date of 13.05.22 and approval number: IE 538 EC.
The allergen will have no effect on consumers who are able to eat cereals containing gluten but can cause illness in those who are allergic.
When someone with celiac disease eats a product containing gluten, their body overreacts to the protein and damages their villi - the small finger-like projections found along the wall of their small intestine.
When your villi are injured, your small intestine can't properly absorb nutrients from food.
Reactions can be immediate for some coeliacs but can take two to three days after eating gluten before symptoms appear for others - and some coeliacs can eat gluten without any apparent symptoms.
However, gluten can still damage the intestines without causing any symptoms.
