Updated Premier League relegation picture as late Everton equaliser closes gap on Leeds United

Everton were able to move within four points of Leeds United towards the bottom of the Premier League table as they rescued a late point against Leicester. Richarlison’s 92nd-minute equaliser ensured the Toffees moved four points clear of the relegation zone ahead of Burnley’s clash with Southampton.

The late goal from the Brazilian could prove to be a real momentum booster for Frank Lampard’s side as they head into a tough tun of fixtures. A Merseyside derby at Anfield awaits on Sunday before a home fixture against Chelsea and then a trip to face Leicester.

Everton’s form away from Goodison Park this season – six points from 15 away games – could really hurt them during the run in. For that reason, a draw against the Foxes at home may be seen by many as a missed opportunity.

From a Leeds perspective, that singular point was a decent outcome even if it did come right at the end of the match. It leaves Jesse Marsch’s side with their fate firmly in their own hands regardless of what happens involving the teams below.

Attention in the relegation battle quickly turns to Turf Moor this evening where Burnley are hoping to move within a point of safety with victory against an inconsistent Southampton side. A win for the Clarets would see them move five points behind Leeds although, they will have finally played the same amount of matches.

A defeat would leave them with plenty of work to do, possibly too much. For their safety hopes, it is absolutely imperative that they are able to get at least a point.

An away victory for Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side will leave Leeds fans feeling like the job is almost done with eight points being a significant gap to make up in six games. Given Burnley have won just four Premier League matches all season, it is unlikely that such a deficit would be made up in what is left of the campaign.
