A new federally funded study will follow 1,500 babies and toddlers hospitalized with viral lung infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia to learn why some recover fully while others keep having breathing problems. The project, called SPIN VINYL, could receive up to $52 million from the National Institutes of Health, but the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has approved only the first year of funding.
Michigan Medicine will lead the consortium as its clinical coordinating center, according to a Michigan Medicine announcement. Children up to 24 months old will be enrolled at 10 hospitals and followed until at least ages 4 to 5.
