Unsolicited range advice: Female golf pro’s awkward exchange viewed more than 10 million times

Georgia Ball’s viral TikTok video from the range in Liverpool, England, has the golf world talking. The clip, which has been viewed more than 10 million times, features the PGA certified instructor working on her swing as a man in the hitting bay next door offered unsolicited advice.

As the man tries to help Ball, she calmy explains that she’s going through a swing change. The man, however, insists that she take his advice, noting that he’s been playing golf for 20 years.

Commentors have called it “mansplaining”, which Merriam Webster defines as explaining something to a woman in a condescending way that assumes she has no knowledge about the topic.

As Ball tries to further explain the changes she’s working on, the man, who never comes into view in the video, tells Ball to “just hit one” to see that he’s right.

Ball later added an on-screen caption that said: “I knew I had to make the next shot a good one.”

She hit a beauty.

“See how much better that was?” the man says.

Ball notes in another caption that it wasn’t any better than the shot before it.

BBC Newsbeat caught up with Ball, who described her viral experience as “crazy”. To those who have praised her patience during the awkward exchange, Ball said it’s not in her nature to interrupt and cut someone off. She can go back now and laugh about it, noting that the majority of golfers she encounters are merely interested in helping each other out.

Ball told the BBC that mansplaining isn’t something she normally encounters.

“I have a lot of interaction with males and females every single day,” she said. “And I’d say it’s mostly always positive.”
