United Utilities explains why town was left without water

Large parts of a Merseyside town were left without water on Sunday evening.

Households in Newton-le-Willows reported having no water or low water pressure at around 6pm on December 19. Some areas of St Helens were also left without water.

Water didn't return for many households until the early hours of Monday morning. One person told the ECHO: "I had no water all evening, it meant I couldn't have a shower or even flush the toilet."

Another added: "Issues with water are bound to happen after a freeze like we’ve just had, I just hope they get it sorted sooner rather than later, I want a shower before work tomorrow."

United Utilities said the water cut was down to a "technical fault", with engineers sent out to deal with the issue shortly after 6pm on Sunday December 18. At around 9pm, the following statement was published by United Utilities: "

"A technical fault has occurred at one of our water works, which is causing no water or reduced pressure for some customers in your area. We have now rectified this issue, however it may take up to two hours for your water pressure to return to normal. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

A further update was posted at 2.13am on Monday, it said: "Good news, we’ve now repaired the technical fault and your taps should be flowing again. However, it may take up to two hours for your water pressure to return to normal.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We are sorry that some customers in the WA10 and WA12 areas experienced disruption to their water supply this weekend.

“The change in temperature – from sub-zero to double figures in some areas over the last couple of days – means that leaks and bursts are beginning to show in customers’ properties and on our network as frozen pipes thaw out.

“Our teams are working really hard to carry out repairs on our pipes as quickly as possible, but some customers may unfortunately have experienced poor pressure or no water.

“We would encourage people to report any leaks on our mains network at https://www.unitedutilities.com/emergencies/report-a-problem/.”
