Unite 'severs ties' with contractor amid police probe

Unite the Union has severed ties with a contractor due to an ongoing police investigation.

Yesterday ( Friday) Sky News reported that Unite had terminated its relationship with the company, which has not been identified.

A spokesman for the company, not named by Sky, told the broadcaster it "recently assisted the police with certain investigations" but "no charges of any nature have been brought against any person in any way associated or connected with our company".

In April this year police raided Unite's London headquarters in Holborn. South Wales Police, who led the operation, executed warrants across the country, including addresses on Merseyside and Cheshire.

At the time a Unite spokesman said: "A Unite employee is now subject to a criminal investigation by the police. The employee's office at Unite's headquarters in Holborn was accessed and searched by the police under warrant."

Last year General Secretary Sharon Graham, who took over from Len McCluskey in 2021, ordered an investigation into the spending of £100million of members' money on a controversial hotel and conference centre in Birmingham. Yesterday Sky claimed that there was a "shortfall" of around £70m in relation to the project.

Unite confirmed to the ECHO that union had "recently severed its relationship" with a contractor.

A spokesperson for the union said: "In December 2021 the then new General Secretary of Unite, Sharon Graham, commissioned an independent QC inquiry into the union’s Birmingham development and later a separate external forensic investigation into Unite’s affiliated service providers.

“The General Secretary is committed to ensuring that no stone is left unturned in uncovering the truth about these matters and taking whatever steps are necessary to protect our members’ interests."

The spokesperson added: "It should be made clear that the union is sharing and will continue to share any pertinent information we obtain about these matters with the police and other relevant authorities.”
