England white-ball coach Matthew Mott has endured a difficult start to his reign, with his side failing to win a single series at home this summer.
England produced their worst performance in the T20I series decider against South Africa at the Rose Bowl, suffering their joint-biggest defeat in the format and getting booed by their own fans after what captain Jos Buttler admitted was a "timid" batting display.
And Mott admitted the way England failed to "mount a challenge" left him with "a sour taste on the last day". Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, he said: "We came in with high hopes to try and win the series and we never really got going.
"They were a bit over par with the bat and clearly we just lost too many wickets to mount a challenge at the end. It ends up with a bit of a sour taste on the last day."
In his first series in charge, England beat the Netherlands 3-0 in Amstelveen, blasting an ODI record 498 in the first game. However, at home England have found success hard to come by, having lost the T20I and ODI series against India and drawn the ODI series against South Africa before suffering defeat against the Proteas in the T20Is.
As a result, England have failed to win a white-ball series at home this summer for the first time in nine years. "It's been a bit of a struggle," Mott added.
"We've had ups and downs throughout the summer. We've played two great teams and come out second both times so we're disappointed."
Mott also said the defeat is a "line in the sand moment for the team" ahead of the T20 World Cup this winter. "We were down on confidence with bat and ball, it was disappointing," he told Sky Sports.
"I thought we put ourselves in a good position to win the series and we'll have take a lot out of that game. I've just spoken to Jos very briefly and this is a line in the sand moment for the team."
