Ross Lyon's personnel crisis is set to deepen with Jimmy Webster and Mason Wood the latest St Kilda players nursing injury concerns.

The Saints maintained their unbeaten start to the AFL season with a rollercoaster 18-point win over Essendon on Saturday night.

But Webster was forced off the field after a head clash with teammate Dougal Howard and Wood fought on despite a shoulder issue.

With about one-third of their squad already out injured, the Saints host Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium in round four.

"My understanding is (Webster's) cheekbone is under a little bit of pressure," Saints coach Lyon said post-match.

"We'll assess it, and then Mason Wood's got a bit of a shoulder, but again we'll assess it in the cold light of day.

"It's not ideal. Jimmy's definitely out with a cheekbone but Mason we'll assess tomorrow."

Wood was one of the Saints' best against Essendon, gathering a career-best 27 disposals and capping off his performance with a goal.

It continued the 29-year-old's strong start to the season.

"His first three games have been outstanding, to be honest, and again he stood up in the last quarter," Lyon said.

"He stood up against Freo (in round one) in the last quarter and he stood up again tonight."

St Kilda's 3-0 record is their best start to a season since 2010, when they reached the grand final for the second consecutive season during Lyon's first stint at the club.
