According to a recent report by the United Nations, more than one million people in Gaza, representing half of the population, are at risk of facing death and starvation by mid-July. The report, jointly released by the UN's World Food Program (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), highlighted the dire situation in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict, which has led to a high death toll, widespread destruction, and mass displacement.
The report pointed out that heavy restrictions on commercial goods, coupled with limited humanitarian access, have exacerbated the crisis. The situation is expected to worsen with expanding military operations in Rafah, further jeopardizing the lives of Palestinians in the region.
The UN emphasized the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities and increased access to provide essential assistance to prevent a potential famine and hunger crisis. The report warned that without immediate intervention, the impact on mortality rates and the well-being of Palestinians, both current and future generations, will be severe.
Furthermore, the UN report underscored that the critical situation extends beyond Gaza, with other regions such as Sudan, Haiti, Mali, and South Sudan also facing catastrophic conditions that require immediate attention to avert devastating hunger crises.
