A senior United Nations official has strongly condemned a deadly Israeli strike on a multistory building in northern Gaza. The incident, which occurred in the Beit Lahiya area, has raised serious concerns about violations of international law.
The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, described the strike as 'appalling' and emphasized the need for a ceasefire and hostage deal in the Palestinian enclave. He expressed deep sorrow over the killing and injury of civilians in Gaza, particularly highlighting the impact on children.
The strike resulted in the deaths of more than 90 people, including 25 children, according to Palestinian authorities. The United States and the United Nations have both condemned the attack, with the US labeling it as 'horrifying' and the UN noting it as one of Israel's deadliest assaults in recent months.
Israel's military has stated that they are investigating the circumstances that led to such a high number of casualties in the area. Meanwhile, Palestinian health officials have reported catastrophic conditions in Beit Lahiya, which are worsening due to ongoing Israeli bombardment.
Following the strike, Beit Lahiya's municipality declared the city as 'disaster stricken' and issued an urgent appeal to the international community. They requested assistance in creating conditions that would allow essential supplies such as water, first aid, and medical staff to reach the affected area.
