Umbrella Academy: What happened to Elliot Page's character Vanya Hargreeves in season 3?

Elliot Page portrayed the character of Vanya Hargreeves on season one and two of The Umbrella Academy.

The actor, best known for roles in acclaimed films Juno and Inception when he was known as Ellen Page, came out as transgender in December 2020, leaving the fate of his character in the Netflix show up in the air.

When Page first came out, Netflix confirmed that he would continue to be part of The Umbrella Academy, though insiders had said there were no plans to change the character's gender on the show.

Now, with season three of The Umbrella Academy finally here, this is what you need to know about Elliot Page's character on the show.

Elliot Page's character came as transgender on season 3 of The Umbrella Academy.

Page's character Vanya is now known as Viktor Hargreeves and uses he/him/his pronouns on the upcoming season.

The actor announced the news himself on Twitter, with a first look photo of Viktor along with the caption "Meet Viktor Hargreeves," much to the excitement of fans.

Netflix then shared the tweet, adding: "Welcome to the family, Viktor — we’re so happy you’re here."

Previously, the streamer had released a teaser for the third season, with Page's character still being referred to as Vanya in it.

Speaking to Seth Meyers, Elliot shared his excitement over Viktor's journey in season three and how showrunner Steve Blackman handled it.

He explained: "When we first talked about it, [Steve] seemed really excited about incorporating it into the show and this incredible [writer] named Thomas Page McBee, who I met doing a miniseries called Tales Of The City, he wrote an incredible book called Amateur that I highly recommend everybody to read.

"He was the first trans man to box in Madison Square Garden. His book and his work in general are so much about masculinity and what it means, and exploring that.

"So Thomas came on board [the show], and helped out. I feel proud of it. I'm excited for people to see it."

As stated by Netflix, after going back in time to 1963 and saving the world at the end of season two, The Umbrella Academy picks up where they last left off the Hargreeves siblings.

The new season is set in an altered timeline, in which Reginald - whose death kickstarted the show - created the Sparrow Academy, a group of suave and smart superheroes mirroring the Umbrella Academy.

Season three follows both groups as they learn to team up and defeat a new entity that threatens to destroy the world.

The tagline for the season asks: "Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?"

The Umbrella Academy stars Elliot Page as Viktor, Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castañeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampan as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as Five, Justin H. Min as Ben, Colm Feore as Reginald, Ritu Arya as Lila, Justin Cornwell as Marcus, Britne Oldford as Fei, Jake Epstein as Alphonso, Genesis Rodriguez as Sloane and Cazzie David as Jayme.
