Ulster Hospital 'under extreme pressure' as urgent staff appeal is issued across Northern Ireland

Some of Northern Ireland's Emergency Departments remain under 'extreme pressure' on Friday afternoon.

Statements issued across social media today, have expressed the nature of the environment in hospitals. The Ulster Hospital currently has 152 patients in their department - 79 of those are awaiting admission.

Those considering attending have been urged to consider these pressures beforehand.

A spokesperson said: "If your condition is NOT life threatening you may have a long wait."

The South West Acute Hospital is also experiencing similar stresses. 46 people are waiting in ED, and 27 are awaiting admission.

In a statement issued by the Trust, a spokesperson said: "Please use the Phone First service, where medical personnel will direct you to the best place for treatment. Phone First operates from 8.00am – midnight, seven days a week. The number to ring is 0300 020 6000."

An appeal for staff was also issued across social media channels.

The Trust added: "We are appealing for Band 5 Staff Nurses & Band 2 Nursing Assistants to cover shifts (days & nights) at Altnagelvin Hospital today (30 Dec) and throughout the weekend If you are available, please contact Bronze Control ext: 214732 before 6pm. After 6pm contact the On Call Manager."
