Russian investigators have opened a terrorism investigation after what they said was a cross-border attack on Russia‘s Belgorod region mounted by what they called Ukrainian armed groups.
It comes as the governor of Russia‘s Belgorod region said on Tuesday that drones had been shot down over the region by anti-aircraft weaponry.
There has been fighting in the region, which borders Ukraine, since Monday, after what Russian officials called a Ukrainian “sabotage group” crossed the border. Kyiv has denied involvement.
Meanwhile in Bakhmut, Ukraine said fighting had decreased todat but shelling continued in the area around it, with its troops keeping a small foothold on the city’s edge and Russian forces clearing areas they hold.
“In the city of Bakhmut, the fighting has decreased, the enemy continues to clear the areas under its control,” Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said.
Russian forces said on Saturday they had completely taken Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine after months of heavy fighting. Ukraine says it has made advances on the devastated city’s northern and southern flanks, and hopes to encircle it.
