Taking in strangers might feel like a daunting commitment, so here is some information to help you understand the process.
Your vacant property or spare room could change lives.
Where do I register my interest in hosting Ukrainians?
If you want to host Ukrainian refugees, you can pledge on the Irishredcross.ie.
How much personal detail will the Irish Red Cross require?
Irish Red Cross officials will be seeking information about your property such as how many bedrooms, toilets, roommates plus where is it located and does it have public transport connections to schools etc.
What happens after I register?
You will be contacted in the coming days and weeks by officials who will seek further info along with explaining the next steps in the process. Then if you are happy to proceed, someone will meet you at your property for an assessment.
How long could you host refugees?
The Irish Red Cross will look for a commitment of six months to one year from those that pledge. However, it is possible Ukrainians will not stay that long if they decide to return home.
Do I have any say in who stays in my home?
The Irish Red Cross will try to match you and your property to a suitable person. If a match is made, you will have a meeting with a Red Cross caseworker and the person you have matched with. Once all parties are happy to proceed, a move-in date will be set up.
What's the difference between a "stand-alone" and a "shared" pledge?
A stand-alone pledge is where a Ukrainian family will stay in a house or apartment on their own while a shared pledge is where one room is available in your home.
Will there be financial support?
There will not be automatic financial support, however the Red Cross may 'step in' when needed.
