US special envoy Steve Witkoff has drawn criticism in Washington after describing Russian president Vladimir Putin as a “humanitarian” following Moscow’s release of American citizen Stephen Hubbard.

Republican senator Thom Tillis criticised Witkoff in a post on X: “WTF, Steve? Look up the definition of ‘humanitarian’.”
