Ukraine-Russia war latest: Poland scrambles jets as Putin attacks Kyiv with jet-powered drones

Poland scrambled fighter jets in the early hours of Tuesday as it responded to Russia's latest attack on Ukraine involving jet-powered drones.

Ukraine’s Air Force issued several warnings to Ukrainians, asking them to seek shelter as Russian forces fired jet-powered drones across all of Ukraine.

It remains unclear how many drones were fired but at least some of them likely travelled beyond Ukraine's borders, with a Nato fighter jet shooting down a drone in Lithuania shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

Lithuanian officials said the drone likely entered from Belarus and was shot down near Pratkunai village in southern Lithuania, near Kaunas.

A drone alert was issued earlier in the capital Vilnius and surrounding region.

Military drones straying into the airspace of Russia's neighbours have stoked concerns that Russia's war in Ukraine is spilling over Nato's borders.

This comes as Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was ready to support a US-led proposal for a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire protecting energy sites – but only if Washington could ensure Moscow was genuinely ready to comply.

Zelensky says Ukraine will support energy ceasefire as 'first step' to end war

Volodymyr Zelensky has said Kyiv was ready to support a US-led proposal for a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire protecting energy sites – but only if Washington could ensure Moscow was genuinely ready to end its war.

Zelensky made his comments in his nightly video address after US president Donald Trump said that Ukraine and Russia had both agreed not to hit each other's energy targets.

“If this can become the first de-escalatory step, a step towards ending Russian strikes against our critical infrastructure and our strikes in response, Ukraine is ready to support de-escalation,” Zelensky said.

"So far, no one has seen any genuine willingness on Russia's part to bring the war to an end. But if our American partners can secure Russia's genuine readiness to end the war aimed at destroying lives, and to do so honestly and on a long-term basis, Ukraine will take its own de-escalatory steps,” Zelensky said.

Kyiv ‘wipes out all of Moscow’s battlefield gains since March’ in blow to Putin

01:00 , Maira Butt

Nearly all of Russia’s territorial gains this year have been wiped out, according to a new assessment by the Institute for the Study of War.

Ukrainian forces have held Russian forces to “near-zero net gains since March 2026”, read the report.

“The situation remains dynamic, and Russian commanders are reportedly pressing Russian President Vladimir Putin for a massive mobilization likely aimed at restoring their ability to seize and hold the initiative,” the ISW said.

European leaders meet as Arctic thaw opens shipping routes and Russian buildup stokes security fears

Monday 14 September 2026 22:00 , Maira Butt

European leaders were meeting Monday to discuss growing competition in the Arctic, where global warming is opening new shipping routes, governments are vying for vast natural resources and a Russian military buildup is heightening security concerns.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen were among leaders expected for the European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, a city perhaps best known for its Santa Claus village.

The two-day gathering that began Sunday comes on the heels of a Norwegian seizure of a Russian vessel earlier this month in the remote Arctic archipelago of Svalbard at the request of Ukraine, drawing the condemnation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

US imposes Iran-related sanctions on Russia's VTB

Monday 14 September 2026 21:00 , Bryony Gooch

The United States imposed Iran-related sanctions Monday on Russia's VTB Bank Public Joint Stock Company, accusing it of involvement in Iranian sanctions evasion, the Treasury Department said as Washington seeks to ramp up economic pressure on Tehran.

The action builds on sanctions imposed against VTB, Russia's second-largest lender, in 2022, when the bank was targetedfollowing Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“Under Operation Economic Outcast, Treasury will continue to target and disrupt ‌those who provide material, technological, or financial support that allows the Iranian regime to ‌sustain its terrorist enterprise,” Treasury ‌Secretary Scott Bessent said in the statement.

“Treasury will not tolerate any support to the regime and will continue to identify, expose, and isolate Iran’s enablers.”

Bessent warned last week that resident Donald Trump's administration would sanction a large bank as it continues to apply economic pressure on Tehran to end ‌a more than six-month US conflict with Iran.

The United States has imposed ‌a range of economic measures against Iran since the conflict began in February, targeting oil exports, shipping networks, ‌weapons procurement channels, financial intermediaries, digital ‌asset exchanges and aviation links.

A Russian drone attack on a train on Ukraine's border with Nato member Poland on Sunday was meant to scare Western countries supporting Ukraine, European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Monday.

“I think we should act the opposite. We should show that we are there for Ukraine and we are not scared,” she told reporters in Rovaniemi, Finland where she attended a summit on Arctic strategy.

Analysis: Russia will celebrate almost killing Boris Johnson – this is Putin’s plan for chaos

Monday 14 September 2026 18:30 , Maira Butt

If blowing up a petrol station and railway carriage close to a train carrying two former European prime ministers and the man who used to run America's war in Afghanistan, the CIA - and rewrote US military doctrine - was an accident, it isn’t one the Russians are admitting to in the Kremlin.

Boris Johnson, Carl Bilt - once Sweden’s PM - and general David Petraeus, the “warrior priest” of America’s War on Terror, are tiptop scalps for Vladimir Putin’s collection and his external spy agency, the FSB, will get kudos for nearly taking them.

Johnson, especially, is a national hero in Ukraine. His record in Britain, where he enhanced Russia’s strategic standing by helping take the UK out of Europe, doesn’t worry frontline soldiers in a country that is grateful for his stentorian support from the early days of the 2022 full-scale Russian invasion.

Poland pledges to strengthen security after drone strikes along border with Ukraine

Monday 14 September 2026 17:30 , Maira Butt

Poland pledged increased security along its border with Ukraine after a wave of Russian drone strikes near the frontier, including two that landed within kilometers of Polish territory.

The move came as Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Moscow appears poised to intensify its campaign against Ukraine’s borders with European countries. Ukraine is under mounting pressure from Russia’s intensifying air campaign that uses ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones to pierce defenses.

“These coming weeks and months will be a time of very intensified actions on the Russian side, and unfortunately we cannot rule out that this escalation will also affect our territory,” Tusk said Sunday after a governmental security briefing in Warsaw. He issued a similar warning on Thursday.

Canada looks beyond America with plans for ‘unique alliance’ with EU

Monday 14 September 2026 16:30 , Maira Butt

Canada is pursuing a "unique alliance" with the European Union as Prime Minister Mark Carney looks to deepen economic ties beyond the United States amid an escalating trade war with Washington.

Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, Carney dismissed reports that Canada was considering becoming an "associate member" of the EU, saying Ottawa instead wants to forge a new kind of partnership with the 27-nation bloc.

"We're not looking to become a member of the European Union," Carney said. "What we are looking — and will begin discussions for — is a unique alliance between Canada and the European Union."
