Ukraine crisis: West Belfast appeal for donations of food and baby items

A West Belfast man has appealed for donations of items which can be sent to help those fleeing violence in Ukraine.

Paul Doherty, SDLP representative and founder of Foodstock West Belfast, says they will be accepting donations from Monday to Thursday this week.

In his appeal, Paul said: "In West Belfast, we are organising humanitarian aid for people fleeing Ukraine.

"Donations are needed for a truck leaving for Poland on Friday. The drop-off point is at Foodstock at 150 Andersonstown Road, BT119BY from Monday."

Items which can be brought to the drop-off spot:

  • Clothes for men, women and children
  • Non-perishable foods
  • First Aid equipment
  • Toiletries
  • Nappies
  • Blankets

On Friday, hundreds of people gathered at Belfast City Hall in protest against the Russian invasion.

Several Ukrainians who live in Northern Ireland addressed the event.

One of the organisers, Kateryna Zaichyk, told the crowd: “This meeting was created just to join everybody and show that people don’t want war, Ukrainians don’t want war.

“They would like to save kids, save families, save Ukraine and save the world because at the moment it is a very, very dangerous situation.”

The protest also heard calls from Amnesty International for the Stormont authorities to “step up” plans to welcome refugees feeling the conflict.
