Ukraine and Russia recently engaged in a significant prisoner swap, facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, resulting in the release of a total of 150 individuals. This exchange marked the first such event between the two countries in nearly four months.
Among the prisoners brought back to Ukraine were 19 defenders of Snake Island, a location that gained prominence as a symbol of Ukrainian resistance during the initial days of the conflict when Ukrainian guards refused to surrender to Russian forces. Additionally, as part of the swap, Russia handed over the bodies of 212 Ukrainian soldiers to Ukrainian authorities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that 75 Ukrainian prisoners, including both civilians and military personnel, were returned from Russia. On the other side, Russia's Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine had also released 75 individuals as part of the negotiated agreement overseen by the UAE.
The Coordinating Committee on Dealing with Prisoners of War in Ukraine expressed gratitude for the successful exchange, highlighting the release of defenders and civilians from captivity. Images shared by the committee depicted servicemen draped in the national colors of Ukraine, reflecting the emotional significance of their return.
