- Autumn conditions are expected to arrive in the UK this week as cold air from the north west brings rain, chilly winds and a drop in temperatures to the mid-teens.
- Wednesday could be the first day since June that temperatures stay below 20C nationwide, according to the Met Office , while heavy rain will move east across the country.
- Temperatures will briefly recover to the high teens in the South East on Friday before falling back to the low-to-mid teens over the weekend.
- The change in weather follows the UK recording its joint-fourth warmest September on record, which saw maximum temperatures reach 28.1C.
- Experts have said wet and stormy conditions in autumn could develop into an icy winter as the “super El Niño” becomes the strongest in history.
