UK weather: Storm Claudia to batter country as Met Office issues 'danger to life' flood alert

An amber weather warning has been issued for parts of the UK on Friday, with up to 80mm of rain expected.

Flooding is likely during heavy downpours brought by Storm Claudia, which was named by the Spanish meteorological service, the Met Office said.

The warning is in place from noon until the end of the day and covers parts of Wales and the Midlands.

A wider yellow alert for rain - also covering London, the South East, South West and East of England - starts at 6am on Friday and runs until 6am on Saturday.

There is an additional warning for winds of up to 70mph in some western areas of the UK in place from noon until midnight.

Issuing the amber alert, the Met Office says Storm Claudia is expected to bring heavy rain leading to flooding and disruption throughout Friday.

It was that “fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life” and that properties are “likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings”.

Delays and cancellations on travel networks are “likely” while powers cuts are “possible.”

Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: "Storm Claudia will bring very heavy rainfall to a large swathe of central and southern England and Wales on Friday into Saturday.

"This rain will become slow moving and some areas could see up to a month's worth of rain in 24 hours.

"Much of this will fall on saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding and contributing to the amber warnings we have issued.

"Within the amber warning areas, some could see in excess of 150mm accumulate during the event, with 60-80mm fairly widely.

"Gusty winds in the north-west of England and north-west Wales is an additional hazard, with 60-70mph gusts possible in exposed places within the warning area."

Storm Claudia has battered parts of Spain this week, shutting schools in the Canary Islands as torrential swept holiday resorts.
