UK weather: More heatwaves on way as temperatures forecast to hit 28C this week

The warm summer weather is expected to continue this week, with the Met Office predicting clear skies and light winds for most of the UK - and scorching highs of up to 28C as the week progresses.

Blue skies are highly likely for Monday, forecasters say, with temperatures due to be significantly milder than Sunday.

Many parts of the UK will enjoy temperatures of 20C and above on Monday, though it won't be anywhere near as hot as the end of last week, which saw highs of 33C in some parts of the South East on Friday - the hottest day of the year so far.

However, temperatures are set to soar later in the week.

"For those of you wondering if the hot sunny spell last week was our summer, don't worry, this week's looking pretty warm as well," said BBC forecaster Chris Fawkes.

"We're gonna draw in milder winds dragging in air that has originated from North America - that milder air will be pushing in behind a warm front."

"It's gonna feel warm in that sunshine."

Fawkes said that Wednesday may bring highs of up to 28C across England and Wales.

"In the north and west where it does stay a little bit cloudier, temperatures generally more into the high teens," he added.

Monday will be "fine, dry and bright with plenty of sunshine and light winds for most areas," the Met Office said in its forecast. "Warmer than Sunday for most. Cloudier with patchy rain in the far northwest."

Birmingham, Sheffield and Newcastle will see highs of 21C, while Cardiff is set to peak at 20C and London at 22C. Temperatures will be slightly lower in Scotland, topping out at 19C in Glasgow and 17C in Aberdeen. Edinburgh may get up to 20C, according to the Met office.

Tonight is set to be clear and dry in England and Wales and turning chilly in the south. Cloud and rain are expected in the far northwest, slowly moving across Scotland and Northern Ireland with some heavier bursts far north.
