UK weather: Met Office gives verdict on chances of snow in DAYS amid biting cold snap

The Met Office has given its verdict on whether we can expect snow in UK next week as temperatures begin to drop.

In a new forecast, senior presenter Aidan McGivern said there were "pretty strong" signals that incoming burst of cold air would bring changes in the weather from the weekend onwards.

This means there is now an increasing chance of snow over the following six to ten days - though Aidan pointed out that there were many other details that were still unclear.

Addressing the "big question mark" over whether this would result in snowfall, he said: "Here's what we do know about next week - it is very likely to be cold, colder than it is now.

"When you've got that cold air in place and we've got some other things coming together - the position of low pressures - that does increase the chance of some sleet and snow."

But Aidan revealed that the "detail of where and when" was something "we just don't know at this stage".

A pointed warning was also given about misleading predictions by rival forecasters, with Mr McGivern saying: "If any outlets tell you that they do know, they are just guessing".

Mr McGivern advised that people should stay up to date with the latest forecasts, adding that it was not unusual for exact dates and times to be difficult when dealing with snow.

The UK Health Security Agency has meanwhile issued a Level 2 Cold Weather Alert for the whole of England as there is now "at least a 60% probability" of severe cold weather, icy conditions or heavy snow next week

The alert, which will apply between Monday 6 March and midnight on Wednesday 8 March, means health risks could be increased for vulnerable people and disrupt the delivery of NHS services.
