UK warns Beijing after BBC journalist covering China protests reportedly beaten by police

The UK has warned Beijing there was “absolutely no excuse” for reporters to be “beaten by the police”. It comes after the BBC claimed cameraman Edward Lawrence was “attacked” during protests in Shanghai.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly described the reported incident as “deeply disturbing”. And Cabinet colleague Grant Shapps said it was of “considerable concern”.

Some footage on social media showed Mr Lawrence being dragged to the ground in handcuffs. He was seen saying in another video: “Call the consulate now.”
