The United Kingdom has started introducing a new contactless airport entry system that uses facial recognition to verify passengers' identities, allowing eligible travellers to pass through electronic gates without physically scanning their passports.
The phased rollout began at East Midlands Airport on October 6, 2026, initially for British citizens. The system is expected to be introduced at all eligible UK airports by early 2027, according to the government announcement.
