Government employees represented by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) could take industrial action in a dispute over pay, working conditions and a proposed shorter four-day working week with no reduction in salary, The Sun reported on 12 October 2026.

Critics say the proposal risks increasing pressure on public finances and reducing services, while the union argues that changes to working patterns could benefit staff and employers.
The PCS plans to ballot members from 20 October to 1 December 2026 after launching a national dispute covering pay, jobs, pensions, terms and conditions and industrial relations.
