Keir Starmer, the human rights barrister who led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the July 2024 UK general election, had made strengthening ties with India one of the key priorities of his government. A major part of that agenda was securing the long-awaited India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a promise he fulfilled during his tenure.
Just days before announcing his resignation outside 10 Downing Street in London on Monday, Starmer met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. During the meeting, the two leaders confirmed that the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) would come into force on July 15.
