UK looks to supply armoured vehicles to Ukraine as British forces demonstrate weapons

British forces have demonstrated a series of weapons to Ukrainian generals visiting the Salisbury Plain training area as the UK looks to supply more weapons to the Kyiv government.

The military delegation, led by Deputy Defence Minister Volodymyr Havrylov, saw mobility protected vehicles, as well as loitering munitions, which hang in the air and can then be later deployed against a target, and the high-speed Starstreak missile system which has already been sent to Ukraine.

The British army’s 3rd Division and the Royal Marines demonstrated various weapons and talks are ongoing on which could be supplied and used by the Ukrainian military.

The armoured vehicles may have some sensitive equipment stripped out of them before being sent to Ukraine.

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said: “Ukraine’s Armed Forces continue to put up a tenacious fight against the illegal and unprovoked invasion by Putin’s forces. “We’re proud that they’re doing so with weapons provided by and through the United Kingdom.”

As Vladimir Putin prepares to unleash a new onslaught on the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, Mr Heappey added: “The Ukrainian job is far from done and the Prime Minister has directed that the UK provides even more in support of this next phase of the conflict.

“It was an honour to show Minister Havrylov and his generals the kit the UK hopes to provide next and to discuss some new weapons that have been trialled recently with UK forces.”

Britain has already supplied thousands of missiles to Ukraine, including Next generation Light Anti-tank Weapons (NLAWs) which Volodymyr Zelensky’s military has successfully used to target Russian convoys which have invaded the country.

Over the last seven years, the UK has trained more than 22,000 Ukrainian military personnel as part of Operation Orbital and the UK-led Maritime Training Initiative, including in, dealing with improvised explosive devices, infantry tactics, medical skills, logistics, leadership and planning.
