UK heatwave: Expert sleeping tips to stay cool at night as temperatures soar

The UK is experiencing some pretty high temperatures currently, with the Met Office issuing an amber weather warning for parts of England.

Although Scotland won't reach as high as 30C, unlike down south, the nights can still feel pretty hot, with many people complaining over the last few days that getting that much needed shut eye is a little more difficult than planned as they try and find a comfy, cool spot to fall asleep in.

Because of the increase in temperature, experts have issued tips on how to keep your four legged friends cool as they list the dog breeds most at risk of a heatstroke. But it's equally as important that we look after ourselves.

So with temperatures continuing to soar and with people continuing struggling to sleep at night due to the heat, sleep experts at French Bedroom are now giving out advice on how to keep your bed cool. These include filling hot water bottles with ice cold water and preparing your bedding a certain way before bed time.

Georgia Metcalfe, founder and creative director of French Bedroom advises: “We love nothing more than those long, balmy sunny days, but those long sleepless summer nights come at a cost and can be a nightmare for millions.

"Creating the right sleep environment at this time of the year just requires a bit of careful planning and preparation, especially if the thought of buying an expensive air conditioning unit remains a distant dream.”

So what are these tips? Here's what you need to know.

Tips to keep your bed cool during a heatwave

Utilise hot water bottles

Fill a hot water bottle with ice cold water then place it in your bed, this will lower your body temperature as you fall asleep as well as making the sheets feel nicer.

Freeze your bedding

Want to make your bedding colder? Then take off your sheets and pop them into the freezer, removing just before bedtime – bliss! You can also add ice packs into your pillowcases when you go to sleep to keep them chilled.

TOG down for summer

Achieving the optimum sleep temperature of around 18°C**, can be a challenge on those long, warm summer evenings. Opting for thin cotton sheets or choosing a lower Tog rated duvet of between 1 - 4.5 will keep you cooler under the covers.

Target the heat zones

When choosing a pillow, think about replacing your snug, fluffy winter pillow with a firmer alternative. The head is one of the hottest areas of the body and a firm pillow will allow the heat to disperse easier.

Get the right bedding kit

Natural fibres are essential when choosing pillowcases or sheets. Cotton, linen and silk sheets have breathable qualities which cool down your skin in the night, as well as absorbing your sweat and drawing it away from you, helping it to evaporate.

Use the fan as a hack

As well as having a fan to help you drift off, you can place a bowl of ice cubes in front of it to achieve the cool breeze and air conditioning experience. Alternatively try a cold wet flannel over the fan as this will have a similar effect. Place this next to your bed for some time in the evening and it will make your bed feel a nice temperature for when you head off to sleep.
