UK-France ‘one in, one out’ Channel migrant deal ends – what it means

  • The UK Government’s "one in, one out" Channel migrant deal with France has been scrapped after France reportedly requested a Europe-wide agreement instead.
  • Under the pilot scheme, people arriving in the UK via small boats were returned to France in exchange for an equal number of asylum seekers using safe routes.
  • Home Office statistics show that 1,117 asylum seekers arrived in Britain and 1,087 were deported under the arrangement between August 2025 and June 2026.
  • The Home Office confirmed the scheme is no longer processing new cases, though deportation flights will continue for those currently detained.
  • Lessons learned from the pilot will be used by the Government to accelerate efforts to return small boat migrants who have no right to remain in the UK.
