The United Kingdom's support for Israel is not unconditional, according to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron. In an op-ed published in the Sunday Times, Cameron emphasized that Israel must adhere to humanitarian laws in Gaza and highlighted Hamas as a significant obstacle to resolving the conflict.
Cameron acknowledged Israel's right to self-defense and expressed the expectation that a democratic nation like Israel would comply with international humanitarian law, even in challenging circumstances. He stressed that as an occupying power, Israel bears a responsibility towards the people of Gaza, and called for collaboration between the international community and Israel to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians.
The UK government is actively working to provide aid to Palestinian civilians, with plans to reopen Ashdod port and Erez crossing, restore water supply, and increase aid flow through Kerem Shalom. Cameron welcomed these developments but cautioned that tangible actions must follow the promises made.
Furthermore, Cameron condemned the killing of aid workers from the World Central Kitchen, including three British ex-servicemen, as a tragic reminder of the human cost of the Gaza conflict. He emphasized the importance of preventing such incidents from reoccurring in the future.
