UK drivers face busiest May bank holiday roads in a decade despite surging fuel prices

  • Motorists are set to make an estimated 19 million leisure trips by car over the early May bank holiday, making it the busiest in a decade.
  • Saturday is anticipated to be the peak day for road travel, with over four million journeys expected, and the M5 from Bristol to Taunton identified as a potential congestion blackspot for those heading to Devon and Cornwall.
  • Despite a significant rise in fuel prices, only a small percentage of drivers (6%) are deterred from travelling, highlighting the public's reliance on cars for bank holiday getaways.
  • The RAC advises drivers to perform vehicle checks, such as tyre pressure and fluid levels, to ensure their cars are ready for the increased traffic.
  • Network Rail has scheduled engineering works affecting several major stations, including Liverpool Lime Street, parts of the East Coast Main Line, and London's Charing Cross and Waterloo East, urging passengers to plan ahead.
