A surge in Covid-19 cases shows the pandemic is not over and there remains a 'real risk' to many of catching the virus with infection rates so high, a UK health leader has said. Dame Jenny Harries, Chief Executive of the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said if you have any symptoms of a respiratory illness, including Covid-19, you should wear a mask in crowded spaces and stay away from others.
A study by Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI, covering March 8 to March 13 2022 showed that prevalence in England during this period was 6.37 per cent. This is the highest recorded figure since the beginning of the study in May 2020 and significantly up on the 2.88 per cent recorded from 8 February to 1 March 2022.
These latest figures show that around 1 in 16 people were infected with the virus. And as of March 22, the proportion of BA.2 in all recorded infections across the country was 94.7 per cent. with one case of the AY.4 Delta sub-lineage detected and one case of BA.3.
