A couple in the United Kingdom got the surprise of their lives after discovering a hidden bricked-up room in the cellar of their century-old home, only to find stacks of cash buried beneath piles of coal.

Luisa, 34, and her husband Dan, who live in Sheffield, made the discovery while exploring their pre-1900 home during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Hidden room concealed behind a brick wall
With extra time on their hands during lockdown, the couple noticed a bricked-up wall beneath the steps leading to their cellar and decided to investigate what lay behind it.
After breaking through the wall, Dan uncovered a hidden room filled with coal.
While clearing it out, he spotted an old paint tin buried underneath the coal.
"He put it to one side for months, and we were nervous about opening it as it smelled like ammonia," Luisa told Newsweek.
Rusty tin held an unexpected treasure
Months later, the family finally decided to open the rusty container together with their children.
"It may not have been the best idea to open a rusty old mystery tin that smells of ammonia in front of kids," Luisa joked.
As shown in a TikTok video posted on her account @scruffyandsorted, the family carefully opened the rust-covered tin using tools instead of their hands.
Inside, they found paper-wrapped bundles that turned out to be stacks of old £5 notes dating back to the 1970s.
The hidden cash totaled more than £1,000.
"None of us were expecting money inside. It was such a fantastic memory for the kids, they will remember it forever," Luisa said.
The discovery came at the perfect time
After carefully drying the old banknotes, the family even used them for a game of Monopoly before taking the money to the bank.
According to Luisa, the unexpected find couldn't have come at a better time.
"It was nice to treat the kids a bit and catch up on any bills," she said. "It took some stress off us for a few weeks."
She explained that she had been temporarily out of work during the pandemic, making the surprise cash especially helpful for the family.
Why old UK homes often hold surprises
Luisa and Dan's home is more than 100 years old, and such properties are common across England.
According to Statista, most of England's housing stock was built before 1919, meaning many older homes still contain hidden architectural features, sealed-off rooms or long-forgotten storage spaces that occasionally lead to unexpected discoveries.
