UK and Ireland submit final EURO 2028 bid as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium included in 10 venue list

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been included on the shortlist of 10 venues in UK and Ireland's final EURO 2028 bid to host the competition. Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and Chelsea's Stamford Bridge have been left off the list, whilst the iconic Wembley Stadium has also been selected.

The bid states that matches would take place in England at Wembley, Villa Park, Everton Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Etihad Stadium, St James' Park, in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium, in Belfast at Casement Park, in Glasgow at Hampden Park and at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. Old Trafford, which has the second-highest capacity of all football stadiums in England, had been put forward as a potential venue, but Manchester United decided to withdraw from the shortlist following talks with the FA.

Tottenham's stadium is one of the most modern venues in Europe following it's completion in 2019 after it replaced Spurs' previous home, White Hart Lane. The venue has hosted concerts, rugby, NFL matches and other events and now could be used for EURO 2028 should the UK and Ireland's bid be approved by UEFA.

The UK and Ireland's final bid to host Euro 2028 states it is "committed to delivering a record-breaking tournament with more tickets than ever before to grow a more diverse and inclusive game". The bid dossier is said to set out "a clear and compelling vision" for the tournament, using the slogan: "Football for all. Football for good. Football for the future."

England reached the final of EURO 2020 but were beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions enjoyed one of their best competition performances on home turf and will be hoping the competition comes back to the UK and Ireland in 2028.

The UK-Ireland bid faces competition from Turkey, with UEFA's executive committee set to make a decision on hosting for Euro 2028 and Euro 2032 in September this year. The UK and Ireland had initially undertaken a feasibility study looking at the possibility of bidding for the 2030 World Cup, but switched focus to the Euros.

The bid also places sustainability and good governance practice as top priorities, with a proposed match schedule to reduce emissions and an adherence to UEFA's major event human rights principles to ensure an inclusive, discrimination-free and equal work environment for colleagues and volunteers.
