LONDON (AP) — The UK’s ambassador to Mexico has left his post after a video was posted on social media that purportedly shows him pointing an assault rifle at an embassy employee.
The incident took place in Sinaloa and Durango, two states in northern Mexico known for the presence of drug cartels. The video, shared on the social media platform X, depicts a man resembling the ambassador seated in a vehicle, handling the alleged rifle and aiming it towards an individual in the back seat. The brief clip was accompanied by a message criticizing the ambassador's actions in light of the ongoing violence perpetrated by drug traffickers in Mexico.
Although no official announcement has been made by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office regarding changes at the embassy in Mexico City, the FCDO website no longer lists the ambassador as part of the diplomatic team.
In response to inquiries about the incident, the Foreign Office issued a statement acknowledging the situation and confirming that appropriate measures have been taken. The statement emphasized the existence of robust HR processes within the FCDO to address internal matters.
Since April, Rachel Brazier has assumed the role of charge d’affaires at the embassy, serving as the acting head of mission in the absence of the ambassador.
