UK Airports Extend Deadline For New Security Scanners

LONDON (AP) — The U.K. government has announced that several major airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick in London, will be granted extensions to fully install new scanning technology, delaying the removal of restrictions on liquids in hand luggage until at least next year. The new scanners, utilizing computed tomography (CT) technology, will allow passengers to carry up to 2 liters of liquid in their hand luggage, a significant increase from the current limit of 100 milliliters. Additionally, laptops and tablets will no longer need to be removed from bags, streamlining the security process.

The restrictions on liquids were implemented globally in 2006 following a thwarted terror plot involving homemade liquid bombs. Originally set for December 2022, the deadline for the new scanning technology was pushed to this summer due to disruptions caused by the pandemic. However, airports faced challenges in meeting the deadline, citing supply chain delays and construction issues.

The Department for Transport will grant extensions on a case-by-case basis, with potential financial penalties for non-compliance. By June, approximately half of passengers at U.K. airports will be processed using the new scanners. London City Airport and Teeside Airport have already successfully implemented the technology.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper emphasized the importance of enhancing security measures and providing a second chance for airports to comply with the new regulations. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are expected to complete the installation of the scanners by this summer and March 2023, respectively. Manchester Airports Group aims to have the scanners fully operational by 2025.

Airport Operators Association's chief executive Karen Dee praised the progress made in enhancing aviation security through these investments. However, Naomi Leach from Which? Travel highlighted the need for clear communication of differing rules at airports to avoid confusion and delays for passengers.

As airports work towards full implementation of the new scanning technology, passengers are advised to stay informed about potential changes and adhere to specific airport regulations to ensure a smooth travel experience.
